Saudi air defense batteries intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi militia toward the southwestern city of Taif early Wednesday, October 28, marking another cross-border attempt against strategic installations in the Mecca province.
What occurred during early morning interception over Taif?
The interception was confirmed in an official statement posted on X by Coalition Joint Forces Command spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki, who said allied air defense systems successfully engaged and neutralized the inbound projectile before it could hit populated areas.

Following the detection of the incoming aerial threat, Saudi Civil Defense placed emergency response units across the Mecca region on high alert.
How does the strike fit into the widening wave of cross-border attacks?
Taif occupies a critical position in western Saudi Arabia and hosts key defense infrastructure, including King Fahad Air Base. The city has been targeted repeatedly in recent weeks alongside other sensitive western nodes, notably the Red Sea oil export hub of Yanbu.
The interception follows an intensified cross-border assault over the weekend, during which allied air defenses engaged a coordinated salvo of ballistic missiles and explosive drones launched from Yemen toward Riyadh, Taif, Yanbu, and the Eastern Province.
