Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Pakistan next year to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, as the two leaders met in Beijing, his office said in a statement.
During their meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Sharif lauded the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the flagship of Xi’s Belt and Road Initiative and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the next phase of upgraded projects, which include five new corridors.
He said the expansion would help both countries build “an even stronger Pakistan-China community with a shared future.”
Sharif also praised China’s “unflinching support” for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and socio-economic development.
He endorsed Xi’s global initiatives — on governance, development, security, and civilization — calling them contributions to international peace and stability.
Xi assured Sharif that China would continue to assist Pakistan in key areas of economic growth and development, particularly as CPEC enters its second phase.
Both leaders described the relationship as “unique and unparalleled” and agreed to strengthen coordination on regional and global issues.
Sharif was in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1
