At least three security personnel were killed and six others, including rescue workers, were injured on Monday when unidentified gunmen ambushed ambulances in Pakistan’s northwestern Karak district, officials said.

Muhammad Asif, district media coordinator for Rescue 1122, told Nukta that two ambulances were transporting five injured Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel when the attackers opened fire. “Three FC personnel were killed, while six others were wounded, including two rescuers,” he said.

Asif added that the vehicles carried seven FC personnel, including two assigned for security, along with four rescuers. “After the initial attack, two rescuers managed to escape, while the others were trapped. The attackers then set one of the ambulances on fire after heavy gunfire,” he said.

Many victims reportedly suffered severe burns. “Some of the injured have been taken to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital in Bannu, while others were referred to the Burn Center in Peshawar,” Asif added.

Earlier drone strike

District Police Officer (DPO) Saud Khan said a drone strike had earlier targeted an FC post in the Bahadur Khel area, under the jurisdiction of Khurram Police Station, leaving five FC personnel injured. “The wounded were being transferred to a hospital for treatment when the attack occurred,” he said.

Police have cordoned off the area and launched search-and-strike operations to track down the attackers.

No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush. However, banned outfits including Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan (IMP), Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Hafiz Gulbahadur group have remained active in the region amid a resurgence of militancy.

Security challenges in Karak

Karak, located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has seen a surge in security incidents in recent years, reflecting broader challenges across the region.

Bordering Pakistan’s former tribal areas, the region has long been a focus of militant activity, with security forces frequently conducting operations against attacks on law enforcement personnel and civilians.

Remote, mountainous terrain and cross-border infiltration continue to complicate policing and emergency response.
