Two civilians were killed, and multiple people were injured, including three police officers, after a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise apartment complex in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday.

The suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether the death was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.

How did the shooting unfold inside the Minneapolis apartment building?

Emergency dispatchers received initial 911 calls around 4:30 PM local time reporting active gunfire at the Loring Towers apartment complex on East Grant Street, situated near Loring Park and the Minneapolis Convention Center. Minneapolis police officers entered the high-rise within minutes, locating initial gunshot victims on lower floors before advancing toward continuing gunfire on an upper level.

According to Minneapolis Police Sergeant Garrett Parten and local law enforcement officials, officers encountered a dense haze on the upper floor that significantly restricted visibility before locating the deceased suspect. One civilian died at the scene, while a second victim succumbed to gunshot injuries after arrival at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Three responding police officers sustained injuries during the tactical entry; one officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while a second officer underwent surgery after being struck in the abdomen. A third officer was evaluated and treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the response. All three officers remain hospitalized in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.

How have state, federal, and local officials responded?

According to CNN, tactical units from the FBI, the ATF, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office assisted Minneapolis police in clearing the building and establishing a multi-block perimeter across downtown.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz commended first responders in a statement on social media, asking the public to "pray for Minnesota" as emergency teams stabilized the area. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that federal agents were deployed on site to provide full investigative and forensic support to local homicide detectives. City officials and police leadership plan to issue further briefing updates as forensic examinations continue.
