The United Arab Emirates will be represented on the United Nations’ new Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, with UAE expert Tuka Alhanai included among 40 global specialists selected for the body, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Thursday. WAM reported.
Guterres described the panel as a landmark initiative designed to ensure that artificial intelligence developments benefit all of humanity.
He said the move responds directly to the “Pact for the Future” adopted by UN member states, which calls for strengthened multilateral frameworks to manage emerging technologies shaping economies, societies, and human life.
The proposed panel will be the first fully independent global scientific body focused on AI, tasked with evaluating its societal, economic, and technological impacts while bridging the existing knowledge gap.
“AI is advancing at unprecedented speed. No single nation can fully grasp its implications alone,” Guterres said, emphasizing the need for shared understanding, international cooperation, and the development of effective safeguards.
The panel is expected to provide impartial guidance on AI, distinguishing between verified scientific findings and misinformation, and serving as a trusted reference amid rapidly evolving technologies.
Guterres explained that members were chosen from over 2,600 nominations worldwide, representing diverse expertise across machine learning, data governance, cybersecurity, public health, child development, and human rights. All members will serve in a personal and independent capacity, free from influence by any government, corporation, or institution.
Operating on an accelerated schedule, the panel aims to release its first report in time to inform a global discussion on AI governance slated for July 2026.
