UAE state oil company says vessel attacked in Hormuz Strait

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company confirmed Saturday that one of its commercial vessels came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday evening.

The state-owned United Arab Emirates energy firm reported no injuries among crew members following the maritime incident along the contested global shipping route.

Why did Iran attack the ADNOC vessel in the Strait of Hormuz?

Iranian military forces attacked the ADNOC vessel to enforce an effective blockade across the strategic shipping passage. Tehran demands transit fees from commercial vessels passing through the waterway, a requirement that Washington strongly opposes. The Friday evening missile incident resulted in zero crew injuries, according to statements carried by the official WAM news agency.

ADNOC leadership issued a public statement emphasizing the urgent necessity of protecting international seafarers, safeguarding freedom of navigation, and maintaining global maritime security. The diplomatic confrontation comes immediately after the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned a separate Iranian attack against two ADNOC-linked vessels earlier in the week.

The recent strike marks the latest in a series of hostile actions against regional energy transport vessels. Last week, ADNOC representatives confirmed that three of its commercial tankers were targeted within the narrow passage. Repeated military strikes across the waterway directly caused the collapse of an April ceasefire agreement between American and Iranian forces.

What are Iran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz?

A previous agreement brokered in June tasked Iranian and Omani diplomats with negotiating long-term administrative procedures for the waterway alongside neighboring Gulf nations in accordance with international maritime law.

However, Iranian security chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr outlined several strict prerequisites for restoring normal maritime access. His listed conditions include ending all military actions against Tehran, completely removing economic sanctions, and paying monetary compensation for wartime damages.
