The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable and integrated transport during the second Saudi International Rail Conference in Riyadh, where global industry leaders and policymakers gathered to discuss the future of railway innovation and connectivity.
Representing the UAE, Mohammed Al Mansoori, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said the Gulf Railway Project embodies a shared vision for regional prosperity and sustainability, according to WAM.
He emphasized that linking transport networks across GCC countries is key to boosting trade, investment, and long-term economic integration.
“Regional connectivity is at the heart of the UAE’s development strategy,” Al Mansoori said. “Through projects such as the UAE-Oman Hafeet Rail and ongoing collaboration with Gulf partners, we are creating a unified rail network that supports shared growth and enhances competitiveness across the region.”
He noted that the UAE’s national railway network, now fully completed with 900 kilometers of track connecting ports and industrial zones, has become a cornerstone of the country’s transport and logistics system. The network, he said, strengthens supply chain resilience, cuts freight costs, and supports diversification away from oil.
Backed by an investment of AED 50 billion, the UAE’s National Railway Program is projected to yield long-term economic benefits exceeding AED 200 billion, underscoring its role as a driver of sustainable development and income diversification.
Al Mansoori added that Etihad Rail’s passenger service, set to begin operations in 2026, will mark a major milestone by connecting key cities through a modern, safe, and eco-friendly network that improves mobility and quality of life.
The Undersecretary also highlighted the network’s contribution to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goal, saying it will reduce transport-related carbon emissions by 21% annually - equivalent to cutting 8.2 million tons of CO₂. He noted that future rail operations aim to integrate solar energy, hydrogen, and hybrid battery systems, reinforcing the country’s transition toward low-carbon, sustainable transport.
