United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday, initiating a three-day official visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

What is the official agenda for UN Secretary-General António Guterres's visit?

Upon landing at Islamabad International Airport, Secretary-General Guterres was formally received by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir. The visit marks Guterres's return to Pakistan to engage with the nation's top leadership, including scheduled bilateral meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and military leadership.

During his stay from October 6 to 8, the UN chief will visit the Islamabad headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to review peacekeeping and border monitoring operations. Additionally, Guterres is slated to attend an operational briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to evaluate Pakistan's climate adaptation strategies and national disaster preparedness.

What key geopolitical and regional security issues are on the table?

High-level deliberations in Islamabad are set to focus on escalating international and regional security challenges. Delegations will address Pakistan's ongoing diplomatic mediation initiatives concerning the US-Iran conflict and efforts to mitigate economic fallout while restoring open maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussions also coincide with heightened regional tension following Pakistan's recent diplomatic protest over the killing of two civilians by Indian Border Security Force personnel in the Bedian Sector. The Foreign Office reaffirmed that the UN chief's visit underscores Pakistan's firm commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter, and peaceful dispute resolution.

According to Anadolu Agency, Secretary-General Guterres and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar are expected to hold a joint press briefing outlining progress across bilateral cooperation and multilateral initiatives.
