U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday condemned a series of attacks on Tesla properties, calling them acts of domestic terrorism and vowing severe consequences for those responsible.
"The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism," Bondi said in a statement. She confirmed that the Department of Justice has already charged several individuals, some facing charges carrying five-year mandatory minimum sentences.
Bondi’s statement followed an arson attack at a Tesla Collision Center in Las Vegas, where five vehicles were set on fire, and the word “Resist” was spray-painted on the building, police said.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared footage of the blaze on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “domestic terrorism” and insisting "Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks."
Authorities are investigating other attacks on Tesla properties, including a Massachusetts charging station fire and a Colorado dealership vandalized with incendiary devices last month.
Political fallout for Tesla
Musk, a key ally and financial backer of President Donald Trump, has drawn criticism for far-right political ties and controversial statements online.
Analysts warn that his political activism could alienate Tesla’s traditionally liberal customer base, contributing to plunging stock prices.
The Vancouver International Auto Show removed Tesla from its lineup Tuesday, citing security concerns but denying any political motivation.
In a Fox News interview, Musk said he was “shocked” by the attacks on Tesla and blamed “hatred and violence from the left.”
Trump also weighed in last week, promising the perpetrators would be caught and would “go through hell.”
As investigations continue, Bondi warned that the DOJ would aggressively prosecute those involved, including anyone funding or coordinating the attacks.
