The United States warned on Monday that it would veto any amendments—whether from Russia or its European allies—to a proposed UN Security Council resolution calling for a "swift end" to the Ukraine war. The draft, notably, omits any mention of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
"We will veto a Russian amendment if it comes to us in the Security Council, we will veto the Europeans' amendments if they come to us," a senior State Department official said, speaking anonymously.
European Union members and the UK are pushing for language that explicitly condemns Russia as the aggressor and upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty, a move that the Trump administration opposes.
The US stance marks a significant shift from the Biden administration’s unwavering support for Kyiv.
A US official said President Donald Trump wants the UN to "find a way to peace" and aims to keep the resolution "noise-free."
However, European diplomats see the omission of territorial integrity as a concession to Russia, complicating efforts to rally global support for Ukraine.
