Dubai is filled with world-class roads and stunning views. The key to experiencing it all? A driver's license.
But with tales of "tough tests" and "strict examiners," it's easy to feel nervous. Don't let that deter you! We're here to guide you through the process so you can cruise confidently.
Here are some top tips we’ve gathered from YouTubers to help you crack the Dubai driving test.
Tips to remember during your lessons
Practice real-world parking: Parking maneuvers you practice in a smart yard might differ from on-road parking. Ask your instructor for lessons on parallel and garage parking in actual traffic conditions.
Familiarize yourself: Before your test, take some time to drive around the entire testing area. This will help you avoid confusion if you find yourself on unfamiliar roads during the test.
When to schedule your road test
Take the morning advantage: If possible, schedule your road test for early morning (around 7 or 7:30 am on Saturday) when there's less traffic. Even after finishing your parking test, booking a slot 2-3 days later for the road test won't be an issue
Tips for the driving test
Pre-drive checklist: Before starting your car, adjust your mirrors for a clear view, make sure your seat is comfortable, and buckle your seatbelt. The examiner might deliberately not wear theirs to see if you notice and remind them.
Mandatory shoulder check: Shoulder checks are mandatory. When changing lanes, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder for hidden vehicles, especially in blind spots.
Focus on parking: The driving test includes five parking maneuvers: parallel, angle, hill, reverse, and emergency parking. You don’t have to pass all of them on the first try — you’ll only need to retake the ones you fail. Focus on doing your best and aim to pass as many as possible in one go.
While you're on the road
Be attentive: Sit up straight, avoid excessive movements, and focus on driving
Stay calm: If a car in front of you brakes suddenly, don't panic. Slow down smoothly without swerving into another lane.
Check mirror: Glance at your rearview mirror every few seconds to stay aware of traffic behind you.
Roundabout safety: Ensure the roundabout is clear before you enter.
School zone caution: Never overtake a stopped school bus, and observe the 40 km/h speed limit in school zones.
Lane change protocol: Check your center mirror, signal, side mirror, and over your shoulder before changing lanes. Briefly check the center mirror again before moving.
Avoid unnecessary lane changes: Stay in the right lane unless overtaking.
Stay within lines: Avoid driving over the yellow line wherever possible.
Avoid critical mistakes: Don't make any errors that require the examiner to take control to avoid an accident, as this will lead to failure.
If you fail to make the cut
In case you don't pass your driving test, ask the examiner for feedback on areas where you can improve.
