The World Bank is providing more than $1.9 billion in financing for two of Pakistan’s flagship hydropower projects—the Dasu Hydropower Project and the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project—the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) said in a statement.
The support includes $1.527 billion for the under-construction Stage-I of the Dasu project and $390 million for Tarbela’s 5th Extension, according to WAPDA. The World Bank is also funding Institutional Assessment and Reforms Consultancy Services (IARC) to strengthen the agency’s governance and efficiency.
The announcement followed a meeting between WAPDA Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Muhammad Saeed and World Bank Country Director for Pakistan Bolormaa Amgabbazar, who reviewed financial matters related to the two projects.
The chairman praised the World Bank for its role as a key development partner, stressing that the projects are crucial for Pakistan’s energy security and will deliver affordable, clean power to support socio-economic growth. He said the IARC initiative would help transform WAPDA into a more robust organization aligned with global best practices.
Amgabbazar reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to Pakistan’s hydropower portfolio and acknowledged WAPDA’s efforts in advancing clean and sustainable energy development.
The Dasu Hydropower Project, located on the Indus River in Upper Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has a planned capacity of 4,320 megawatts. Stage-I, currently under construction, will generate 2,160 MW. The Tarbela 5th Extension, being built on Tunnel No. 5 of the Tarbela Dam, will add 1,530 MW of generation capacity.
