World’s first 3D-printed ‘abra’ set to sail soon
Trial operations ongoing by Dubai RTA
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has marked a significant milestone in transportation innovation by launching the trial operations of the world's first electric abra made with 3D printing technology. The groundbreaking initiative, a collaboration between the RTA and private sector partners, is set to redefine the city's iconic water transport system.
An abra is a traditional ferry boat found in the UAE, particularly in Dubai. It is considered to be one of the oldest modes of transportation in the city.
Designed to accommodate 20 passengers, the abra seamlessly blends traditional aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. Its 3D-printed monocoque structure, measuring an impressive 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width, is the longest of its kind. Powered by electric motors and lithium batteries, the vessel is expected to significantly reduce both manufacturing costs and operational expenses compared to traditional fiberglass abras.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated: "The trial operation of the electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology, along with the improvement of traditional abra stations project, is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance the marine transport services, a vital mobility means in Dubai, adding much value to the maritime transport sector.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy. By adopting this technology, we aim to reduce manufacturing time by 90%, slash costs by 30%, and cut operation and maintenance expenses by 30%."
Beyond technological advancements, the electric abra also contributes to Dubai's environmental sustainability goals.
The successful implementation of this project is expected to elevate Dubai's marine transport system to new heights, making it more efficient, sustainable, and enjoyable for both residents and tourists alike. As the city continues to push the boundaries of innovation, the electric abra stands as a testament to Dubai’s commitment to a future-forward approach to transportation.
Plans for upgrading abra stations
As part of the RTA's broader plan to enhance marine transport services, the authority is also undertaking a comprehensive upgrade of four traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek by expanding and improving waiting areas, providing priority seating and dedicated spaces for People of Determination. Docking spaces will be widened by 15%, and all waiting areas will be fully shaded. Commercial spaces will increase by 27%, and overall compliance with the Dubai Code will rise by 87%.
Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station would be the first ones to be completed by August 2025.
