Deadpool & Wolverine tries to rectify Marvel's errors
Watching Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman together is a treat
Cameos from classic Marvel characters is something to remember
Some feel Deadpool is an overrated superhero; others believe he has powers beyond those of his contemporaries. Deadpool & Wolverine prove the latter right by taking over the box office and steering the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into the right direction.
The film’s success has more to do with the union of both Wolverine and Deadpool than the film’s storyline which might seem odd to those who haven’t been loyal to the MCU. The visual thrill of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool fighting together (and each other) is something that was missing from cinema since Avengers: Endgame.
Could a third Deadpool movie have worked without Wolverine in it?
That is debatable. The first and second Deadpool struck box office gold, and the same was expected from the latest installment. However, had Wolverine not been in this picture, the sacred timeline would have been a mess. Why? Because only the combined powers of Deadpool and Wolverine would have been able to withstand all those who wanted to take over the Universe, without any resistance.
Should the film be watched in cinemas with friends, despite the Adult rating? Of course. It has been made for Marvel fans who have had to watch films featuring the Marvel superheroes fail at the box office.
It has Deadpool being Deadpool …
Deadpool may not have Captain America's following, or he may not be as loved as Iron Man, but the way Ryan Reynolds owns the character makes the audience want to watch him. If his origin was traced in the first two films, his ambition to join Avengers was the highlight this time around, a rejection he didn’t take well.
That’s why when the opportunity did come his way to help the world and be noticed by the Avengers, Deadpool took it without thinking twice. How he achieves his goal and what steps he takes to save those he loves is what makes this Deadpool installment worth your time, and money.
Wolverine is back, baby!
Need I say more? Watching Wolverine again, especially after the character’s death in Logan, is the best thing to happen in the MCU. Jackman plays a mean Wolverine, having played the character since the first X-Men movie in 2000. He gets it all right: the anger in his eyes, the depth in his voice, and the mannerisms required to play the mutant with adamantium in his skeleton.
Hugh Jackman also gets to play most of the Wolverine variants (except one!) which is also interesting for the audience who have so far seen just one. Be it the scene where he takes on multiple ‘Deadpools’ or the fight sequence with the titular one, he is on top of his game. Since action is louder than words in the movie, it’s the action that counts for both Wolverine and Deadpool who also narrates the story in his signature style.
The cameos are literally to die for
It might seem like a move from the ‘desperate times, desperate measures’ chapter from the book of filmmaking, but it certainly didn’t disappoint at all. Many classic Marvel characters appeared in cameos here which made the audience go wild. From Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm to Wesley Snipes' Blade, from Jeniffer Garner’s Elektra to Dafne Keen’s X23, everyone makes an impact with their brief cameo.
However, seeing Channing Tatum in the Gambit costume was a surprise no one was ready for, since he was part of an unproduced flick, unlike his counterparts. One hopes that after the success of Deadpool and Wolverine, Marvel will consider him for a Gambit film and give the audience what they have been hoping for.
It tries to rectify the mistakes in the MCU
Through Deadpool & Wolverine, the Marvel bigwigs have tried to rectify past mistakes that have resulted in multiple flop films in recent years. Be it the over-ambitious Mobius, the useless Eternals, or even the haphazard The Marvels, Marvel have failed each time they've gone overboard.
This is why the decision to rectify the ‘sacred timeline’ through Deadpool seemed to be the most logical solution for the audience who wanted to visit the original MCU. Only Deadpool could have made the audience believe that he has the power to rectify errors, and that’s exactly what he does here.
Fans might be disappointed that he didn’t get to break the fourth wall this time, but that’s because Deadpool was either fixing the timeline or convincing Wolverine to do the right thing. By the time the movie ends, the audience feels that they have returned to the golden era of MCU where movies made sense, and where they got their money’s worth.
