The Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched the emirate’s first-ever Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Environment Sector, a science-driven roadmap aimed at protecting Abu Dhabi’s ecosystems and natural resources from the escalating impacts of climate change.

The plan aligns with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy 2023-2027, the UAE National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050, and the Global Climate Resilience framework introduced at COP28, WAM reported.

Focusing on three climate-sensitive systems -- groundwater, soil, and biodiversity -- the plan addresses their importance to public health, food and water security, agricultural sustainability, and overall ecosystem stability.

It outlines 142 adaptation measures to be implemented by 2050, with 86 priority projects scheduled for the next five years. These measures include a blend of technical solutions, institutional reforms, and nature-based strategies.

The plan was developed through a collaborative process involving over 40 entities from government agencies, academia, civil society, and youth. It features built-in mechanisms for regular review, integration of new climate data, and ongoing stakeholder engagement to ensure flexibility and long-term relevance.

According to EAD, this initiative will bolster Abu Dhabi’s natural resilience, safeguard biodiversity, and contribute to national goals for sustainable development and climate adaptation. It also complements broader efforts to improve food self-sufficiency and promote more sustainable land and water management.

The Environment Sector plan is one of four sectoral initiatives being introduced under Abu Dhabi’s wider climate adaptation strategy, positioning the emirate as a regional leader in proactive climate resilience planning.
