Abu Dhabi clinic performs Gulf’s first robotic lung transplant

The Abu Dhabi clinic has completed over 60 lung transplants since 2022, cementing its status as the region’s top transplant center.

An advanced medical facility in Abu Dhabi has achieved a historic breakthrough by performing the Gulf region’s first robotic lung transplant -- placing it among just five centers worldwide to have carried out such a procedure, WAM reported.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi successfully performed the groundbreaking surgery on two patients suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and secondary pulmonary hypertension -- progressive conditions that severely scar the lungs and strain the heart.

To manage the high-risk cases, surgeons relied on Veno-Arterial ECMO, a life-support technique that temporarily assumes the function of the heart and lungs while the damaged organs are replaced.

This medical milestone was made possible by the generosity of organ donor families, alongside the coordinated efforts of donor hospital teams, the UAE’s national organ donation initiative HAYAT, the Department of Health -- Abu Dhabi, and the Ministry of Health and Prevention’s National Center.

The Abu Dhabi clinic has now completed over 60 lung transplants since reviving its program in 2022, reinforcing its role as the region’s leading transplant center.

It is increasingly being recognized as a global referral hub for patients with advanced lung diseases, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, and Bronchiectasis.
