The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved loans totaling $530 million to bolster infrastructure and social services in Pakistan.

As much as $200 million is dedicated to modernizing the country’s power distribution networks.

This effort will particularly benefit the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), and Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO).

The project aims to reduce energy losses, boost infrastructure resilience, and support efficient energy delivery.

Key upgrades include the installation of advanced metering systems, performance monitoring systems for transformers, and the modernization of grid stations to handle higher voltages.

The ADB has also approved $330 million in additional financing for Pakistan’s Integrated Social Protection Development Program (ISPDP).

This funding will bolster the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), aiming to alleviate poverty among women and vulnerable families. The program will enhance institutional capacity, improve access to education, health services, and nutrition, especially in disaster-prone areas.

The initiative underscores ADB’s commitment to enhancing human capital development and reducing intergenerational poverty in Pakistan.

“These initiatives are part of ADB’s ongoing efforts to address significant challenges in Pakistan’s energy and social sectors,” said Yevgeniy Zhukov, ADB Director General for Central and West Asia.

"Reliable electricity and robust social protection systems are crucial for the country’s economic stability and improving quality of life."

These projects are expected to bring substantial benefits by addressing the immediate needs and fostering long-term resilience in Pakistan's energy and social welfare systems.
