Algerian professor wins Great Arab Minds Award in Medicine

Professor Yasmine Belkaid of Algerua has been named the winner of the Great Arab Minds Award in Medicine 2024.

Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum lauded her achievements in immunology and microbiota research as a continuation of the Arab world’s historic contributions to science and medicine.

Professor Belkaid, President of the Institut Pasteur in France, has significantly advanced medical understanding. Her research on the role of microbes in enhancing immunity and preventing disease has been groundbreaking.

With over 220 scientific publications, her work addresses the links between microbiome imbalances and chronic illnesses, as well as the role of skin microbes as a frontline defense against infections.

Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the Arab world’s legacy of medical luminaries like Ibn Al-Nafis and Al-Zahrawi. “The Arab region continues to produce world-class researchers, inspiring future generations to follow their example,” he said, emphasizing the importance of celebrating modern pioneers.

The Great Arab Minds Award, launched by Sheikh Mohammed, honors exceptional achievements across fields including medicine, economics, and literature. The initiative not only celebrates Arab talent but also aims to inspire future generations.
