Andrea Kimi Antonelli has rewritten Formula 1 history, becoming the youngest world champion in the sport's history after securing the 2026 Drivers' Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Italian achieved the remarkable feat in only his second season with Mercedes, bringing an end to Sebastian Vettel's 16-year-old record as the youngest Formula 1 world champion.

Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to mathematically secure the championship in Mexico City, regardless of the results of his closest competitors. He went a step further, crossing the finish line in third place behind race winner Max Verstappen and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The result gave Antonelli an unassailable lead in the Drivers' Championship with four races still remaining in the 2026 season.

At 20 years and 68 days, Antonelli surpassed Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first championship with Red Bull in 2010.

The achievement also ended Italy's 73-year wait for a Formula 1 Drivers' World Champion, with Alberto Ascari the country's last title winner in 1953.

Nine Grand Prix victories and five consecutive wins

Antonelli's championship-winning campaign has been built on remarkable consistency, race-winning performances and an ability to handle pressure against some of the most experienced drivers on the grid.

The Mercedes driver has secured nine Grand Prix victories in 19 races during the 2026 season, establishing himself as the dominant force in the championship.

His most impressive run came early in the campaign when he won five consecutive Grands Prix, beginning with the Chinese Grand Prix and continuing through Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco.

The winning streak also saw him become the youngest driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix, adding another significant record to his growing list of achievements.

His victories did not stop there. Antonelli subsequently added wins in Belgium, Italy, Spain and the United States to his season tally.

One of his standout performances came at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he won from 19th on the starting grid, delivering a memorable result in front of the home crowd.

Although he experienced difficult weekends during the middle of the season, including disappointing results in Barcelona and Britain, Antonelli recovered to maintain his championship advantage.

By the time Formula 1 arrived in Mexico City, he had built a lead that left his rivals with little room for error.

From a young karting enthusiast to Formula 1 champion

Born on August 25, 2006, in Bologna, Italy, Antonelli's connection with motorsport began at a very young age.

His father, Marco Antonelli, was a racing driver and played an important role in introducing him to the sport. Kimi began karting at seven and quickly established himself as one of the most promising young talents in European motorsport.

Mercedes recognized his potential early, bringing him into its junior driver program in 2019 when he was just 12 years old.

His progress through the junior categories was extraordinary. In 2022, he won both the Italian and German Formula 4 championships, recording 22 victories across the two competitions.

A year later, he secured the Formula Regional European Championship title and also won the Middle East regional championship.

Rather than following the conventional route through Formula 3, Mercedes backed his talent and promoted him directly to Formula 2 in 2024.

He made an immediate impression, winning races at Silverstone and the Hungaroring, further strengthening the belief that he was ready for the biggest stage in motorsport.

His performances convinced Mercedes that he was not just another promising youngster but potentially the future of the team.

Replacing Lewis Hamilton: A decision that raised eyebrows

Perhaps the biggest moment in Antonelli's early career came when Mercedes announced that he would replace Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, had announced his decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari, leaving one of the most prestigious seats in motorsport vacant.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff made the bold decision to promote an 18-year-old Antonelli directly into the team's senior lineup alongside George Russell.

It was a decision that attracted considerable attention and criticism.

Many questioned whether such a young driver, with limited experience in the junior categories, was ready to take on the responsibility of replacing one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history.

There were also concerns about the pressure of joining a championship-winning team and competing against established names from his very first season.

However, Wolff remained convinced that Antonelli had the talent and temperament required to succeed.

Reflecting on the decision after the championship victory, Wolff revealed that some people had doubted the appointment so strongly that two sponsors even left the team over the signing.

Wolff described the promotion as a calculated risk, explaining that his immediate reaction after Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari was that Mercedes should put Antonelli in the car.

The teenager's first season in 2025 was not without difficulties. He managed three podium finishes and 150 championship points but also experienced inconsistent performances and several difficult races.

Mercedes continued to back him despite calls for the team to reconsider its decision.

That faith has now delivered the ultimate reward, with Antonelli becoming a world champion in only his second season.

Toto Wolff's faith pays off

For Wolff, Antonelli's championship represents the culmination of years of investment in a driver Mercedes identified as a future star when he was still a child.

Speaking after the title-winning race, Wolff expressed his pride in the Italian's journey, particularly considering the criticism he faced during his first season.

He said: "We always believed in his talent and knew those difficult experiences would make him stronger."

Wolff also praised Antonelli's maturity, highlighting how he managed the pressure of a championship-deciding weekend and delivered when it mattered most.

The Mercedes team principal described the achievement as extraordinary, pointing out that the Italian had become a world champion at just 20 years old in only his second season.

Verstappen, Hamilton and Norris congratulate the new champion

Antonelli's achievement has earned widespread recognition from fellow drivers, including some of the biggest names in Formula 1.

Max Verstappen, who won the Mexico City Grand Prix, was among the first to congratulate the young Italian. The four-time world champion praised Antonelli's consistency and ability to avoid major mistakes throughout the campaign.

Verstappen said: "He's just driven incredible."

He also described the championship as thoroughly deserved, highlighting how impressive it was for a driver to achieve such success in only his second season.

Hamilton, who finished second in Mexico City and had vacated the Mercedes seat Antonelli inherited, also shared the podium with the new champion.

The seven-time world champion described the occasion as a special moment, saying it was beautiful to share the podium with Antonelli as he celebrated his first world title.

Lando Norris, the previous world champion, was equally impressed. He praised Antonelli's performances and said:

"He's made everyone else look silly."

Norris also highlighted how the Italian had mastered his Mercedes and worked hard to understand the car, adding that he deserved every bit of his success.

Other drivers, including Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri, also congratulated Antonelli, recognizing his ability to maximise the opportunity Mercedes had given him.

A new chapter for Italian motorsport

Antonelli's championship is significant beyond his individual achievement.

Italy had not produced a Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari won his second consecutive title in 1953. More than seven decades later, Antonelli has brought the championship back to the country.

He has also become the first driver born in the 21st century to win the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship.

At just 20, he has already achieved what many drivers spend their entire careers chasing.

With four races still remaining in the 2026 season, Antonelli and Mercedes will now turn their attention towards securing the Constructors' Championship.

For now, however, the spotlight belongs to the young Italian who arrived at Mercedes amid doubts, inherited one of the most challenging seats in Formula 1 and turned that opportunity into a historic championship.

The boy Mercedes backed at 18 is now Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion.
