Dubai reaches new green milestone with 216,500 trees planted in 2024
City's green spaces grow by 57%, bolstering sustainability efforts under the Quality of Life Strategy 2033
Dubai Municipality has announced a significant achievement in its ongoing commitment to sustainability, planting 216,500 trees in 2024—marking a 17% increase from the previous year. This ambitious effort translates to about 600 trees being planted every day, underscoring Dubai’s dedication to expanding its urban green spaces.
The city’s green coverage has also seen impressive growth, with green spaces expanding by 391.5 hectares (roughly 3.9 million square metres) in 2024. This represents a 57% increase compared to 2023, contributing to the Municipality’s broader environmental goals as part of Dubai’s ‘Quality of Life Strategy 2033’.
In addition to the new tree plantings, Dubai Municipality has also focused on planting 5.3 million seedlings and replacing 45 million seasonal flowers throughout the year. These efforts are not just aimed at beautifying the city but are also crucial in the city’s long-term sustainability plan.
Beautifying the city
As part of the Dubai Green Project, the Municipality completed 165 beautification initiatives, enhancing residential areas, roads, parks, and public spaces across the city.
The trees planted by the Municipality include both native species, such as Ghaf and Sidr, and ornamental varieties like neem, Indian jasmine, and a variety of palm species. This diverse mix helps enhance the city’s greenery while promoting biodiversity.
Additionally, sustainable irrigation methods using recycled water have been integrated into these green spaces, ensuring the conservation of water resources while maintaining the health of the newly planted trees and plants.
With over 52 million square metres of greenery by the end of 2024, Dubai’s green spaces have now doubled since 2011, marking a clear commitment to creating a sustainable and environmentally-friendly city.
