Unidentified gunmen shot dead Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) director Shamshad Khan Mehsud in Girra Baloch village in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said.
Preliminary assessments suggest a possible link to terrorism, though no motive has been established, police said.
Who was the Election Commission official shot dead in Tank?
Mehsud was a director at the Election Commission of Pakistan, originally from Waziristan and living in Islamabad. He also served as the provincial election commissioner of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was visiting Tank to offer condolences following his elder brother’s death, according to police. He was shot while travelling along the main road after attending a condolence gathering.
Tank District Police Officer Samad Khan told Nukta that unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire on Mehsud. He sustained critical injuries and died while being taken to hospital, the police official said.
Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the attackers. Mehsud had travelled to Tank to visit his brother’s home after the death of Shamshir Khan Mehsud, a former National Bank manager.
What security incidents have hit Tank recently?
His killing follows a series of security incidents in Tank in recent days, including the deaths of a peace committee member and police personnel, as well as a suspected suicide attack. Three traffic police officers were also killed in a separate attack by unidentified gunmen.
No militant group had claimed responsibility for the latest shooting. Tank, in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has experienced repeated militant attacks targeting police, security personnel, members of local peace committees and other government officials.
The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated factions have been blamed for violence in the region.
