At least four police officers were injured when suspected militants opened fire on a police team in Pakistan's Dera Ismail Khan district, police said Saturday. The attack targeted vehicles carrying senior officers in the Hathala police station area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

How many police officers were injured in the Dera Ismail Khan attack?

A senior police officer and three other policemen sustained minor injuries when militants fired on vehicles carrying the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kalachi and the station house officer (SHO) of Hathala police station, said Zulqarnian Yaqoob, spokesperson for Dera Ismail Khan police.

All four were taken to hospital for treatment.

Where did the Dera Ismail Khan police attack take place?

The attack took place near Pota and Al-Amin Farm House in the jurisdiction of Hathala police station, with attackers firing at the police vehicles from multiple directions. The DSP Kalachi's vehicle overturned during the attack, causing minor injuries to those inside, Yaqoob said. The injured officers were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan for treatment.

Police said an intense exchange of fire between security forces and the attackers was ongoing. Additional police personnel were deployed from Aijaz Shaheed Police Lines following the attack and launched a search operation to locate the attackers. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Why does Dera Ismail Khan keep facing militant attacks?

Dera Ismail Khan has remained a security flashpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with militants frequently targeting police and other security personnel. The district has also been the focus of intensified counterterrorism operations.

Its strategic location near the borders of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan has contributed to its security challenges, with militants carrying out ambushes, roadside attacks and assaults on security installations in the wider area. Despite stepped-up security operations, militant attacks continue to pose a threat to frontline personnel in the district.
