The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has called for the removal of international sanctions on Syria and the implementation of political and economic reforms in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for regional stability and development.

These appeals were made during an extraordinary meeting of GCC foreign ministers held in Kuwait on Thursday.

Syria: A path to stability and sovereignty

The GCC urged the international community to lift sanctions on Syria, highlighting the importance of supporting the Syrian people in rebuilding their economy and achieving national reconciliation. The ministers emphasized the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Syria, rejecting foreign interference and advocating for a comprehensive, inclusive political transition.

The council also condemned ongoing Israeli aggressions in Syria, including military strikes and the occupation of the demilitarized zone on the Syrian border, which "flagrantly violates Syrian sovereignty and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement." The GCC called for Israel’s withdrawal from all occupied Syrian territories.

The ministers reaffirmed their stance on the Golan Heights, underscoring that it remains Syrian land. They also welcomed the United Nations' proposal to establish a mission to oversee Syria’s political transition, emphasizing adherence to the UN Charter and respect for state sovereignty.

Lebanon: A call for reforms and unity

Turning their attention to Lebanon, the ministers reiterated their support for the country’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity. The GCC emphasized the importance of implementing structural reforms to address Lebanon's economic crisis and urged the election of a new president to fill the vacancy since October 2022.

The GCC also condemned continued Israeli violations of Lebanon’s territorial integrity and ceasefire agreements, which have caused civilian casualties and displaced communities. The Council called on the international community to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the Taif Agreement, which outline measures for lasting peace and security in Lebanon.

Gaza: A call for urgent action

Regarding the Gaza Strip, the Ministerial Council reiterated the GCC’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights. The ministers expressed hope for the success of Qatari-Egyptian-American mediation efforts to release hostages and detainees. They also stressed the urgent need for an immediate, permanent, and comprehensive ceasefire, the lifting of the siege on Gaza, and the unconditional opening of all crossings.

The Council emphasized the importance of ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid, relief efforts, and medical supplies to meet the basic needs of Gaza’s population. The ministers called on all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and the alleviation of human suffering in the besieged territory.
