'Gentleman' sparks controversy over authenticity and political commentary
Popular Pakistani drama faced criticism for misrepresentation of Korangi culture
Residents of the area criticize the show for its inaccurate portrayal of dialect and culture.
Humayun Saeed and Yumna Zaidi starrer 'Gentleman' may have ended, but the makers have hinted at the possibility of a sequel. Whether Iqbal Munna returns or not is not the real issue for Korangi residents, who are still angry over how their area and culture were misrepresented.
Nukta's Sibte Hassan visited Korangi during the show's run and spoke to a few residents who felt the show would have been more accurate if the writer Khalil ur Rehman Qamar spent a few days in Korangi before penning the script.
They pointed out that the language used in the show sounded more like Mumbai slang than Korangi dialect. Some even accused the makers of filming Korangi scenes in different parts of Karachi.
Despite the controversies surrounding its cultural authenticity, 'Gentleman' has succeeded in sparking important conversations about political corruption in Pakistan, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating potential future developments in the story.
