Pakistan’s Supreme Court reviewed on Tuesday a detailed report on the living conditions of the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently held at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, according to court proceedings.

The report, submitted by the jail’s superintendent, said the PTI founder is housed in a seven-cell compound within the prison. The compound includes a corridor measuring 57 feet by 14 feet in front of his cell.

The report stated that a lawn adjacent to the compound is also accessible to him. It said he spends time there reading books and newspapers and taking sunlight.

According to the superintendent, the seven-cell compound can accommodate 30 to 35 inmates but is currently designated solely for the PTI founder.

The report added that fitness equipment, including a cycling machine and other gym facilities, has been provided for his physical activity.

Details of his daily meals were also outlined. Breakfast includes dates, walnuts, honey, coffee, porridge, lassi, warm milk and chia seeds, along with sweet lime and pomegranate juice.

Lunch consists of desi chicken, mutton, salad, mixed pickles, potato chips, fried egg and mixed lentils, the report said.

In the evening, he consumes a shake made with almonds, raisins, coconut powder, milk, dates, banana and apple.

The report said he has access to natural light and fresh air throughout the day and is being kept in a secure environment with what it described as better-class facilities within the jail.

Health concerns

Health concerns emerged last week after court-appointed lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar visited the former prime minister at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi and said he had suffered “severe vision loss” in his right eye due to central retinal vein occlusion.

Jail authorities said a team of doctors from multiple hospitals examined him on Sunday and submitted their findings to a court.

A two-page medical document circulated on social media and published by several local media outlets — but not officially released or verified by the government — stated that unaided vision in his right eye was 6/24 and 6/9 in the left, improving with glasses.

The document said he was examined by Prof. Nadeem Qureshi of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital and Prof. M. Arif of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, and that his personal physicians were briefed.

The former premier’s health has prompted protests by supporters, including demonstrations and road closures in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and a sit-in outside parliament in Islamabad.

The PTI founder, a former international cricket star who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases he says are politically motivated. The government denies the allegations.
