Abu Dhabi is set to bring one of the most advanced cancer treatments in the world to the region with a new heavy ion therapy center—one of only 15 such facilities globally, Khaleej Times reported.

The high-tech center will be located near the Fatima Bint Mubarak Centre at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Its launch was announced Tuesday during the opening of Abu Dhabi Health Week.

Heavy ion therapy uses carbon ions—much heavier than protons—to deliver high-energy radiation with remarkable precision. The method allows doctors to destroy cancer cells more effectively while sparing healthy tissue, thanks to the focused nature of the treatment.

According to Khaleej Times, patients undergo detailed imaging using CT and MRI scans to map the exact size and location of the tumor. A tailored treatment plan is then developed using advanced software to calculate the precise dose and angle for delivery.

The carbon ions are accelerated to nearly 70 percent the speed of light, enabling them to reach deep into the body and treat tumors that are difficult to access or resistant to other therapies.

The second edition of Abu Dhabi Global Health Week (ADGHW) officially opened Monday.

Running through April 17, the event is expected to attract more than 15,000 participants and feature over 325 exhibitors from around the world.

The event reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to becoming a global hub for health innovation, aligning with its broader vision to enhance healthcare outcomes through technology, collaboration, and sustainable investment.
