A Karachi court on Saturday granted bail to television anchorperson and Awam Raj Tehreek chief Iqrarul Hassan in a case over allegedly sharing anti-state and defamatory material online, Dawn reported, citing his lawyer.
The East district judicial magistrate granted the relief against surety bonds of Rs200,000, defense counsel Advocate Ahmad Masood said.
What did the court hear before granting bail to Iqrarul Hassan?
Investigators had submitted the charge sheet and taken possession of Hassan’s electronic devices, Masood said.
During the hearing, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) told the court it no longer required Hassan for further questioning, though a forensic examination report was still awaited.
What happened to Iqrarul Hassan’s earlier bail application?
The latest development follows the magistrate’s decision on October 22 to dismiss Hassan’s earlier bail application.
The defense subsequently challenged that order before a sessions court.
When was Iqrarul Hassan arrested and what are the charges?
Hassan was taken into custody by the NCCIA on October 12 over allegations that he had circulated false, defamatory and anti-state content through his official social media accounts.
The case was registered under Sections 9, 10, 24 and 26-A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca).
