Iran's military said on Saturday it had launched strikes against US military installations in Kuwait and Jordan, describing the attacks as retaliation for American military action. The announcement, carried by Iranian state television, came as the exchange of attacks between the US and Iran entered its seventh consecutive night.
What did Iran claim to have targeted in Kuwait and Jordan?
Iran claimed to have struck ammunition storage facilities and command buildings at Al-Adiri camp in Kuwait, as well as headquarters, ammunition depots, and communications infrastructure at Ali Al-Salem Air Base. In Jordan, Iran said it targeted fuel storage facilities at Al-Azraq Air Base. The claims were published by Iranian state broadcaster on its Telegram channel.
Kuwait's armed forces said air defence systems had intercepted what they described as hostile aerial threats, warning residents that explosions could be heard as a result of the interceptions. Several military personnel were reported wounded in a separate Iranian drone attack on Kuwaiti army facilities and camps on Friday. Kuwait had also reported an Iranian attack on a power and water distillation plant the previous day.
How have Gulf states responded to the Iranian strikes?
Bahrain activated air raid sirens after the reported attacks. Bahrain is home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, one of Washington's most significant military installations in the Gulf. Qatar also said it had intercepted missiles, and all three Gulf states host US military installations that have been targeted or threatened during the ongoing exchange of strikes.
Iran also claimed to have targeted Bahraini airspace over sites hosting US aircraft and radar and military aircraft systems in Qatar. Both Bahrain and Qatar said they intercepted incoming missiles before they reached their targets. The widening geographic spread of Iranian strikes across multiple Gulf states marks a significant escalation in the regional conflict.
