A severe storm that swept across Pakistan's Karachi on Monday left at least 13 people dead and more than seven injured, authorities said. Strong winds, heavy rain, lightning strikes, and collapsing structures contributed to multiple accidents across the city.
Near Landhi Gujar Para, a wall collapsed, killing a married couple, rescue officials said. In Malir Nadi Yaro Goth, a lightning strike claimed one life, while in Korangi 3.5, a roof collapse killed a woman.
In Clifton’s Neelum Colony near the Driving License Office, a tree fell, injuring two people. Two others were hurt when a livestock shelter roof collapsed near Bhens Colony.
In Baldia Moach Goth, near Madina Colony, a wall collapse killed nine people and injured three, according to Rescue 1122. The agency said all victims were sitting on makeshift supports of dilapidated walls and roofs when the structures gave way.
“All deceased and injured have been moved to nearby hospitals,” a Rescue 1122 spokesperson said. “In Baldia Moach Goth, the victims were reportedly habitual drug users.”
Widespread power outages
The storm also caused widespread power outages and flooding in neighborhoods including North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Surjani, Federal B Area, Saddar, Clifton, Cantonment, Railway Colony, Delhi Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan-e-Jamal, and Garden.
Thunder and lightning accompanied the heavy rainfall, with wind speeds reaching 90 kph on Shahrah-e-Faisal and 97 kph in Mauripur, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said.
The meteorological department had forecast rain for Karachi and other parts of Sindh, warning of western winds affecting most parts of the country. Rain and possible hail were expected on Monday and Tuesday in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Jamshoro.
