Tucked away in a corner of DHA Phase 4, Karachi, Khudee Bakery & Cafe is redefining the dining experience by showcasing the abilities of differently-abled individuals. This unique establishment, an initiative of the Karachi Vocational Training Centre for the Differently Abled (KVTC), offers delicious food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere
Upon entering Khudee, guests are greeted by staff wearing sunflower badges, a symbol of their unique talents. The cafe's name, which means "self" in Urdu, embodies its mission of fostering self-belief and empowerment among its employees.
Amir Shahab, Director of Rehabilitation at KVTC, explained the philosophy behind Khudee. "Our trainees undergo a rigorous four-year program before working here. This cafe is the final stage of their training, preparing them to become contributing members of society," he said.
The cafe's menu caters to diverse tastes, offering an array of cakes, pastries, sandwiches, pancakes, salads, and soups. Guests enjoy all-day breakfast options alongside a selection of coffees and shakes. Khudee operates daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., providing ample opportunity for patrons to experience its unique blend of culinary delights and social impact.
Inside, a quote adorns the wall, highlighting the cafe's ethos: "Elevate yourself so high that before every destiny, God should ask you: Tell me, what is your wish?"
This sentiment resonates with the staff, who view their work at Khudee as a testament to their capabilities. One trainer emphasized, "This organization empowers us, instilling confidence and pride in our abilities."
Khudee Bakery & Cafe shines as a symbol of inclusivity in Karachi’s culinary scene, proving that with the right support, differently-abled individuals can not only integrate into the workforce but also excel in their chosen fields.
