Lahore police have added a murder charge to an alleged gang rape case after an 18-year-old domestic worker died during surgery at Services Hospital on Wednesday.

The victim had accused her employer's son and the family's driver of repeatedly sexually assaulting her at a residence in Model Town. Her death followed serious complications linked to a botched abortion.

Why did Lahore police add a murder charge to the gang rape case?

Police added Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, covering intentional murder, to the first information report after the victim died during surgery.

The charge was added because her death was directly linked to the circumstances that followed the alleged assault, including the abortion complications that led to her hospitalization. Section 302 carries punishments ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty, depending on the evidence presented in court.

What happened to the victim after the alleged assault?

The victim had alleged that the employer's son and driver assaulted her repeatedly at a Model Town residence over several days. Police said the employer had attempted to keep the matter concealed to avoid legal action. The FIR was initially registered on the basis of the victim's recorded statement, nominating both accused men and the employer.

The victim later developed serious health complications linked to abortion pills. Investigators said she was first taken to a private clinic in Raiwind, near Lahore, where doctors allegedly diagnosed a foetal death at around four to five months of pregnancy and described her condition as critical. She was subsequently sent to her hometown of Faisalabad to recover.

How did the victim die and who has been arrested?

Her condition deteriorated further in Faisalabad, and she was admitted to Services Hospital in Lahore on May 23. She died there during surgery, police confirmed. The driver named in the FIR has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, while another suspect, who is employer's son, secured bail.

Police said the murder charge was added following her death, escalating the legal proceedings significantly. The case has drawn public attention to the vulnerability of domestic workers in Pakistan and the consequences of concealing abuse within households.
