The official visit, spanning October 20 to 22, marks the first time a Maldivian president has visited Pakistan in 11 years, underscoring a renewed diplomatic momentum between Islamabad and Malé. The high-level tour coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
President Muizzu arrived alongside First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and an official delegation that includes key cabinet ministers and senior government functionaries.
Upon touchdown at Islamabad International Airport, the Maldivian delegation was formally received by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Wajiha Qamar, alongside senior diplomats and protocol officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
What areas of bilateral cooperation are on agenda during the visit?
According to a statement issued by Pakistan's Foreign Office, the state visit reflects the deep-rooted, fraternal relations shared by the two countries and emphasizes a joint commitment to broadening bilateral engagement. The diplomatic agenda is structured to explore new frameworks for cooperation across sectors of mutual interest, including trade, maritime connectivity, vocational education, healthcare, tourism, and climate resilience.
During his stay in Islamabad, President Muizzu is scheduled to hold formal delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and meet with President Asif Ali Zardari. Bilateral discussions are expected to focus on revitalizing regional partnerships, enhancing capacity-building initiatives for Maldivian professionals in Pakistani institutions, and strengthening multilateral coordination within international forums such as the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and institutional cooperation frameworks are slated for signing following formal bilateral talks at the Prime Minister’s Office.
