Mall of the Emirates, one of the Middle East’s leading shopping and leisure destinations, is set to undergo a AED 5 billion expansion, adding 20,000 square meters of retail space and 100 new stores, its owner Majid Al Futtaim Group announced.
The multi-year development will reshape the popular Dubai landmark, which first opened in September 2005 and quickly became one of the city’s most visited attractions, famed for its indoor ski slope and luxury retail mix.
A total of AED 1.1 billion has already been invested in “major enhancements” to the mall, including a new wellness club, a cultural hub, a dining precinct, and infrastructure upgrades, the company said in a statement.
“Two decades ago, Mall of the Emirates set a new benchmark for retail and entertainment in the region,” said Khalifa Bin Braik, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Asset Management.
“Today, we’re building on that legacy with a bold investment that redefines what a mall can be.”
The ongoing investment will focus on transforming both the physical environment and the visitor experience, introducing new entertainment concepts and modern dining options, while improving access and infrastructure.
New precinct and facilities
Among the key highlights of the expansion is a new indoor-outdoor precinct, featuring a mix of fast-casual dining and interactive entertainment spaces. At its heart will be the mall’s first-ever outdoor food and beverage courtyard, scheduled to open in early 2027.
“This adaptable space will transform into a lush green oasis during the cooler months, offering visitors a refreshing new way to experience the mall’s evolving culinary scene,” the company added.
Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, including a full revamp of the West End district and improved road access from Umm Suqeim bridge and Sheikh Zayed Road, in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The enhancements, including a barrierless parking system from Parkin, are expected to be completed by September 2024.
Entertainment and cultural additions
The expansion will see the introduction of several new entertainment concepts, with four new venues set to open in late 2026. Vox Cinemas has already unveiled what it calls the world’s most advanced IMAX experience at the mall.
In addition, the ‘highly anticipated’ New Covent Garden theatre is expected to soft-launch in mid-2025, ahead of a grand opening later in the year.
Further lifestyle and entertainment offerings within the new precinct are scheduled for completion by 2026, while the dining outlets and North End spaces will open in early 2027.
“We have many more projects underway and will be announcing them soon, ranging from high-end restaurants to elevated experiences for our VIC (Very Important Customer) community,” Bin Braik said.
