Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has sent a Rs5 billion ($18 million) defamation notice to Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain on Tuesday, demanding he withdraw corruption allegations he made against her government during a television interview.

What is Maryam Nawaz's defamation notice to Salik about?

The notice challenges corruption allegations Salik made on a television talk show on Monday. He alleged that political considerations were influencing development priorities and public spending, and that a disproportionate share of Punjab's development budget went to Lahore. Maryam rejected the claims as baseless.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) announced Tuesday that legal notices had also been sent to ARY News presenter Naeem Ashraf Butt and the channel's chairman, Muhammad Iqbal. The notices relate to comments made during the televised interview.

Salik, a Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader, praised former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi while criticizing the current provincial government. He also said he regularly heard complaints of corruption in Punjab.

What did Maryam Nawaz say in Attock?

Addressing a ceremony in Attock on Tuesday, Maryam said she would not tolerate what she described as baseless corruption allegations. "If you have evidence, bring it forth. Otherwise, I will drag you to court," she said. She also asked why Salik continued to serve in a government he considered corrupt.

Maryam linked the dispute partly to the recent replacement of Gujrat's deputy commissioner, an administrative official responsible for coordinating government affairs at the district level. She alleged that Salik had wanted a candidate of his choice appointed to the position. "I will not allow anyone to interfere in the will of the people," she said.

The chief minister also rejected Salik's description of Elahi as Punjab's "best-ever chief minister." She cited flooding in Gujrat during his tenure as evidence of shortcomings in the former administration. Maryam said her government had improved the city's drainage system, claiming that rainwater no longer accumulated as it had in the past.

What does the defamation notice say?

According to the notice, the interview's host introduced and guided the discussion about alleged corruption before Salik made what the notice described as "sweeping and baseless allegations" against the provincial government.

The notice argued that allegations of dishonesty or corruption against the chief minister's office carry serious implications because of its public responsibilities and the extensive reach of electronic and digital media.
