Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abu Dhabi on Friday for an official visit, marking the start of a six-nation diplomatic tour, WAM reported.

The visit focuses on energy security, trade expansion and strategic partnerships, with Modi expected to spend around four hours in the country before departing for Europe. His tour will also take him to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.

What is the purpose of Modi's UAE visit?

Modi's UAE stop is centered on energy security and long-term economic cooperation, with talks expected to cover LPG supply arrangements and strategic petroleum reserves.

India's foreign ministry said the visit aims to expand trade and investment links and strengthen India's role in global supply chains. The UAE is one of India's most important energy partners and hosts around 4.5 million Indian nationals.

How was Modi received on arrival in Abu Dhabi?

Modi's aircraft was escorted by a formation of UAE military jets as it entered UAE airspace, with the squadron leader seeking permission to accompany the flight to the airport.

On the ground, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan received the prime minister in a ceremonial welcome that included national anthems and a guard of honor.

After landing, Modi posted on social media calling the reception a "special gesture" and said he looked forward to talks on energy, investment and supply chains.

Why is energy security a key focus of Modi's Gulf stop?

Global oil markets have seen continued volatility due to disruptions in Gulf shipping routes and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE remains a critical node in India's energy supply chain, and New Delhi is seeking to move beyond a conventional buyer-seller relationship toward a broader strategic energy partnership. Officials said discussions are expected to include long-term LPG supply agreements and arrangements for strategic petroleum reserves.

How does the UAE visit fit into India's broader diplomatic strategy?

The UAE stop is the opening leg of a tour designed to deepen India's economic engagement with both the Gulf and Europe. India concluded a free trade agreement with the European Union in January, which both sides described as a landmark in bilateral economic relations.

Analysts say India is seeking to capitalize on supply chain diversification away from China, positioning itself as a manufacturing and technology hub through closer integration with European and Gulf economies.

Modi's subsequent stops in the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy will build on that agenda. In Sweden, he is scheduled to address a European business leaders forum alongside EU chief Ursula von der Leyen. His visit to Norway will be his first to the country and the first by an Indian prime minister in 43 years.
