Recent flooding across Pakistan has caused an estimated PKR 822 billion ($2.9 billion) in economic losses, according to official documents.
The catastrophic events have affected nearly seven million people across 70 districts, severely damaging agriculture, infrastructure, and homes, particularly in Punjab province.
Government reports reveal that 27 districts in Punjab suffered significant damage to farmland and housing, as rivers Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi overflowed. Nationwide, 229,763 homes were damaged, and at least 1,037 people were killed while 1,067 others were injured.
In response, the federal government has provided compensation of $6,900 per deceased individual to the families of the victims.
Authorities have requested assistance from development partners to assess the full scale of damages.
The worst-hit areas are grappling with destroyed infrastructure, ruined crops, and displaced communities, underscoring the country’s ongoing vulnerability to climate-related disasters.
According to the International Monetary Fund, the devastating floods have weighed on the outlook, particularly of the agriculture sector, bringing down the projected FY26 GDP to about 3¼ -3½%.
The floods underscore Pakistan’s high vulnerability to natural disasters and substantial climate-related risks, and the continuing need to build climate resilience.
