Pakistan Petroleum Limited has discovered gas and condensate at its exploratory well Rahi X-1 in the Shah Bandar Block in Pakistan's southern Sindh province.
The find marks the fourth consecutive hydrocarbon discovery by the company in the block.
What did PPL discover at the Rahi X-1 well?
PPL identified a hydrocarbon-bearing interval at the Rahi X-1 well after analyzing drilling results and wireline log data. The well produced 0.493 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and 12 barrels of condensate per day during testing, confirming a viable discovery in the Shah Bandar Block.
PPL operates the Shah Bandar Block with a 63% working interest. Its joint venture partners include Mari Energies Limited, which holds a 32% stake, while Sindh Energy Holding Company Limited and Government Holdings (Private) Limited each hold a 2.5% interest.
How was the Rahi X-1 well tested?
The well was spudded on June 17 and drilled to a measured depth of 2,612 meters to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Upper Sand reservoir within the Lower Goru Formation. The identified interval was tested through a cased-hole drill stem test.
During testing, gas and condensate flowed through a 32/64-inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 133 pounds per square inch recorded from the A-Sand interval of the Lower Goru Upper Sands. The results confirmed commercially significant hydrocarbon presence at the site.
What does this mean for Pakistan's energy sector?
The discovery strengthens the hydrocarbon potential of the Shah Bandar Block and adds to a series of recent exploration successes in the area. Pakistan is seeking to boost domestic oil and gas production and reduce reliance on energy imports.
