Pakistan secured a convincing 57-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first T20 International in Bulawayo on Sunday, thanks to a stellar bowling performance by left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem, who claimed a career-best 3-20.
Electing to bat first, Pakistan posted a competitive total of 165/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
Usman Khan led the charge with a brisk 39 off 30 balls, featuring two fours and two sixes, while Tayyab Tahir remained unbeaten on 39 off just 25 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and a six.
Irfan Khan Niazi provided further impetus with a quickfire 27 off 15 balls, laced with three fours.
Contributions from Saim Ayub (24), Omair Bin Yousuf (16), and captain Salman Ali Agha (13) helped anchor the innings.
Zimbabwe’s chase started with promise, led by captain Sikandar Raza’s 28-ball 39. However, the hosts crumbled from 77/2 to 108 all out, unable to cope with Pakistan’s disciplined bowling on a sluggish surface.
Abrar Ahmed struck early blows, finishing with 3-28, while Sufiyan Muqeem’s precise wrist spin dismantled the middle order. Haris Rauf also chipped in with 2-17.
The second match of the three-game series is set to take place at the same venue on Tuesday, where Pakistan will aim to seal the series.
