One civilian was killed and five others injured when mortar fire from Afghanistan struck homes and a market in Pakistan’s Lower South Waziristan district on the night of Oct. 27, officials said. The attack damaged several shops in Angoor Adda Bazaar as Pakistani forces responded to the cross-border firing.

What happened in the South Waziristan mortar attack?

Afghan Taliban forces allegedly fired a mortar round at civilian homes and Angoor Adda Bazaar, according to Musarrat Jan, deputy commissioner of Lower South Waziristan. The attack killed one person and injured five others, while several shops sustained damage. Jan said Pakistani forces stationed along the border were responding to the attack.

How did Pakistani officials respond to the Afghan Taliban firing?

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Gov. Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the incident, describing it as unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban regime. He praised the Pakistan Armed Forces’ response and said Pakistan would not tolerate attacks on its people or violations of its sovereignty.

Kundi said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had sacrificed thousands of lives in the fight against terrorism. He added that any aggression against Pakistan would be met with resolve.

Why are Pakistan and Afghanistan experiencing border clashes?

Intermittent clashes between Pakistani and Afghan forces have continued for more than a year, particularly along the border areas of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. Pakistan has also conducted cross-border strikes in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar, Paktika and other provinces, saying the operations target militant positions.

Relations deteriorated sharply in October 2025, when major border clashes erupted following a series of explosions in Kabul on Oct. 9. Taliban forces subsequently launched attacks along the Pakistan border, prompting Islamabad to respond with cross-border shelling. The clashes caused casualties and infrastructure damage on both sides.

Have Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban reached a border agreement?

Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban government have held several rounds of negotiations in Qatar, Turkey and China since the escalation, but the talks have yet to produce a breakthrough.

Border crossings were closed on Oct. 12, 2025, bringing trade to a halt. The latest mortar attack in Lower South Waziristan comes amid continuing tensions and unresolved disputes between the two sides.
