Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met in Istanbul on Saturday to strengthen the Pakistan-Türkiye strategic partnership.
The high-level delegation talks focused on rapidly expanding bilateral trade, defense cooperation, and regional energy initiatives following Pakistan's successful facilitation of US-Iran peace negotiations.
How will Pakistan and Türkiye expand their economic and defense cooperation?
Both nations committed to achieving a mutually agreed annual trade goal of 5 billion dollars by expanding high-growth commercial sectors. Turkish enterprises will invest heavily in Pakistan's digital economy, transmission infrastructure, renewable energy projects, and ongoing state privatization programs to drive mutual industrial growth.
Addressing the Pakistan-Türkiye Business-to-Business Conference in Istanbul, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described Türkiye as Pakistan's strongest and most sincere international ally.
He recalled that their unique historical relationship has remained rooted in mutual trust and unwavering cross-border support since the Turkish War of Independence. The prime minister thanked the Turkish leadership for consistently standing with the Pakistani people during times of war and devastating natural disasters.
Sharif highlighted Pakistan's successful role in facilitating the challenging diplomatic dialogue and subsequent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
He asserted that the signing of the landmark Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has created a vital opportunity to promote long-term regional economic stability. The premier praised President Erdoğan's economic stewardship for successfully transforming the Turkish republic into a highly modernized industrial and global manufacturing power.
Pakistan intends to benefit from Turkish corporate expertise to reform its national electricity distribution networks and expand domestic renewable energy infrastructure.
The government promised to systematically eliminate bureaucratic barriers to trade to safeguard foreign capital and attract major investment into priority mining fields. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz welcomed the visiting dignitaries and commended Pakistan's active contributions toward maintaining international peace and secure shipping corridors.
What specific investment opportunities did Pakistan present to Turkish businesses?
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stressed that the rapidly changing global economic landscape requires both brotherly nations to build dynamic corporate alliances.
Turkish Trade Minister Dr. Ömer Bolat echoed these sentiments, noting that substantial untapped commercial potential exists between the two allied republics. Consequently, a specialized panel of Pakistani federal ministers presented lucrative opportunities across diverse economic sectors to the assembled Turkish business community:
Information Technology: IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja showcased the rapidly expanding digital economy and the country's massive freelance workforce.
Power and Energy: Energy Minister Sardar Awais Leghari invited Turkish participation to modernize transmission lines and manage power distribution networks.
Petroleum and Mining: Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik presented lucrative joint ventures in oil, gas extraction, and mineral exploration.
State Privatization: Privatization Adviser Muhammad Ali briefed corporate entities on state asset sales and public infrastructure investment prospects.
The subsequent delegation-level talks between the two state leaders successfully covered bilateral special economic zones and pressing transnational security challenges.
Shehbaz Sharif thanked President Erdoğan for Türkiye's consistent and unwavering support regarding the resolution of the long-standing Kashmir sovereignty dispute. The prime minister explicitly reaffirmed Pakistan's complete diplomatic solidarity with Türkiye's official political position concerning the ongoing Cyprus territorial issue.
President Erdoğan expressed immense satisfaction with the growing momentum of the Pakistan-Türkiye strategic partnership during the joint press conference. He described the recently finalized Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as an exceptionally important milestone for preserving global macroeconomic and political stability. Both leaders concluded the historic Istanbul summit by reaffirming that persistent dialogue remains the only sustainable path to resolving deep international conflicts.
