Protests erupted on Friday at a public university in Pakistan's largest city after a student was killed after a bus ran over her.
The victim was identified as Aniqah Saeed, a student in the Department of Social Work at the University of Karachi.
She was reportedly disembarking from a bus operated by the university when she was fatally injured.
According to university officials, the incident occurred near the Mahmood Hussain Library. Saeed was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
"This is a deeply tragic incident," said Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi. "We take full responsibility and are in contact with the victim’s family. We will fulfill whatever demands they have."
The student’s body has been handed over to her family.
Protests erupt on campus
Following the accident, students gathered in protest on campus, demanding justice for Saeed and a temporary suspension of the university’s transport service. They called on officials to review and improve safety protocols before operations resume.
Chants for accountability echoed across the campus as demonstrators blocked access roads and urged the university administration to conduct a thorough investigation.
An official inquiry into the incident is underway, according to the university.
