Seven years after former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s iconic question, “Mujhe Kyun Nikala? ” (Why was I removed?), reverberated across Pakistan, Sher Afzal Marwat, a former member of Khan-led party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), invoked the phrase in the National Assembly, questioning his expulsion from the party.
Marwat was removed from the PTI on February 12 following allegations of “disciplinary violations.”
His expulsion came after party leaders, including PTI Chairman Imran Khan, expressed dissatisfaction over his conduct at a political gathering in Swabi on February 8. The decision followed multiple complaints from party members.
Who is Sher Afzal Marwat?
Sher Afzal Marwat began his political career in 2008 with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) before joining PTI in 2017. Despite losing the 2018 general elections, he emerged as a prominent figure within PTI, leading rallies and gatherings across Pakistan.
In November 2023, Marwat was appointed PTI’s senior vice president and subsequently won a National Assembly seat in the 2024 general elections. However, his tenure has been marked by internal rifts and controversies. Following controversial remarks, he was removed from the party’s core and political committees.
Marwat’s political journey reflects his resilience and loyalty to the PTI, despite facing internal challenges and disciplinary actions.
As the debate over his expulsion continues, his future within the party remains uncertain.
Chances of return
Marwat’s expulsion highlights internal tensions within PTI.
In January, he was issued a show-cause notice for remarks contradicting the party’s official stance, leading to disciplinary action. Despite this, several senior PTI leaders have shown support for Marwat’s reinstatement.
Shehryar Afridi, PTI leader and former minister of state, acknowledged Marwat’s loyalty during challenging times and stated that his case would be discussed with Imran Khan. “All members are bound by the party’s code of conduct, but reconsideration is possible,” Afridi said.
Shaukat Yousafzai, another PTI leader and former provincial minister, also advocated for Marwat’s return, emphasizing his strengths and contributions to the party. According to sources, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has urged Imran Khan to reconsider Marwat’s expulsion.
Barrister Gohar Ali, PTI’s Chairman, told Nukta that Marwat has the right to seek a review of the decision before Imran Khan, adding, “Whatever Khan decides will be implemented.”
Disappointment and loyalty
Reacting to his expulsion, Marwat expressed deep disappointment but reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to PTI and its leader, Imran Khan.
“The decision seems to have been influenced by individuals who never accepted me within the party, but I refused to engage in personal disputes,” Marwat said.
Speaking to Nukta, Marwat maintained his allegiance, stating, “I will not join any other political party. Imran Khan’s party is my party, and I will remain a part of it.”
Despite his removal, Marwat remains hopeful for reconciliation, suggesting the issue could be resolved if party leaders engage with Imran Khan.
