A popular Pakistani YouTuber has been charged under Pakistan’s cybercrime and blasphemy laws after being accused of hurting religious sentiments, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The case, filed at Nishter Colony Police Station in Lahore, against Rajab Butt stems from the launch of Butt’s new perfume, which has drawn criticism from religious and social circles.

Authorities said the complaint alleges that the social media personality made remarks perceived as offensive in connection with the perfume’s promotion, which drew criticism.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and Section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to blasphemy. "Legal proceedings will follow based on the evidence collected," a police spokesperson said.

Butt’s perfume launch had already been met with criticism on social media, with some accusing him of crossing ethical and religious boundaries. The latest case intensifies scrutiny on the YouTuber, who has previously faced legal trouble over his content.

Authorities said strict legal action would be taken if the allegations are proven. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the case develops.

What’s the controversy?

It all began when the YouTuber revealed the name of his new perfume to be '295'. The number popularly denotes a section of Pakistan's blasphemy laws. The offense carries severe legal and social consequences in the country.

Butt claimed his perfume was actually named after Indian singer Sidhu Moosewala’s song "295" and was not intended as a direct reference to Pakistan’s blasphemy law. However, the branding and promotion of the fragrance led to criticism, particularly from religious groups, who accused him of mocking beliefs.

Following the backlash, Butt released a video apologizing, stating that he never intended to hurt religious sentiments. He also announced that he would be discontinuing the perfume in response to the criticism.
