Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been released from the squad for the remainder of the ongoing ODI tri-series after requesting to return to domestic cricket to regain his batting form and confidence.
Why has Saim Ayub left the squad?
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Saim discussed his situation with the head coach before expressing his desire to work on his batting in domestic cricket.
The left-hander had struggled to make an impact in the series, managing just 21 runs across his first three matches. The team management and national selection committee accepted his request, acknowledging his assessment of his current form.
Sahibzada Farhan has subsequently been named as his replacement for the remainder of the tournament.
Could Pakistan experiment with their opening combination?
Saim's departure follows the earlier release of spinner Sufyan Muqeem, who was replaced by hard-hitting opener Maaz Sadaqat.
With Fakhar Zaman also struggling for runs, scoring just 26 in three matches, Pakistan could consider testing a new opening combination featuring Farhan and Maaz.
Having already secured qualification for the final with three consecutive victories, Pakistan have an opportunity to assess their options ahead of the title clash.
Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in the fifth match of the tri-series at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, 27 October.
