Schools in major Pakistani cities to close Dec 16 over terror threats
Punjab closes schools in Lahore, Rawalpindi over credible terror threats while Islamabad declares holiday on 10th anniversary of APS attack
The provincial government in Pakistan's Punjab province announced on Sunday the closure of all educational institutions in Lahore and Rawalpindi on Monday, December 16, amid credible security threats.
The district administration of capital Islamabad has also declared a public holiday for government and private schools. The decision coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Army Public School (APS) attack in Peshawar, one of Pakistan’s deadliest terrorist incidents.
On December 16, 2014, Taliban militants stormed the APS, killing 149 people, including 132 children. The attack targeted students and teachers, leaving a deep scar on the nation.
Punjab Home Department officials, citing a “serious threat,” urged immediate action to ensure safety.
Speaking to Nukta, Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat said, “A serious threat is what has been conveyed to us. Let’s hope for the best.”
A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the threat remains concerning but the situation will be reassessed on Tuesday.
On November 27, the U.S. Mission to Pakistan advised avoiding Serena Hotel Peshawar until December 16, highlighting ongoing concerns.
Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner confirmed the closure of all public and private schools in the city, though universities will remain open. Similarly, Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner issued a notification for school closures across the district.
The decision, coming just a day prior, has sparked concern among parents and students, underscoring the need for heightened security measures.
