Suicide attack on Pakistan checkpoint kills 15 security personnel

A suicide attack on a joint military and police checkpoint in Pakistan's northwestern Tank district killed 15 security personnel and injured eight others, the military said on Friday.

Security forces killed 12 militants during a counter-operation launched after the assault.

What happened in the Pakistan checkpoint suicide attack?

Militants attacked the Manjhi Khel check post overnight between July 23 and 24, attempting to breach its defenses before detonating an explosives-laden vehicle against the perimeter wall. The blast killed 12 soldiers, two police officers and one Forest Department official, and wounded eight other personnel. Security forces repelled the assault and killed 12 militants while pursuing the attackers.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's media wing, said the militants were sponsored by India. District Police Officer Abdul Samad said the suicide bomber drove a vehicle carrying an estimated 1,500 kilograms of explosives into the checkpoint before detonating it. The blast was followed by an hours-long exchange of gunfire that spread panic among residents in nearby areas, police said.

Who were the victims of the Tank district attack?

The police officers killed were identified as Bilal Khan and Tala Muhammad, while the Forest Department official was identified as Noor Azam. Funeral prayers for the three were held with full state honors on Friday. The identities of the military personnel killed in the attack had not been released.

Police said the operation was temporarily suspended overnight because darkness, repeated explosions and intense gunfire made it too dangerous for rescue teams to enter the compound. Clearance operations resumed on Friday, with rescuers searching through the rubble for survivors and recovering bodies. More than 30 military and police personnel were present at the checkpoint when the attack occurred.

How did the attackers plan the assault?

Police sources said the attackers also used a white Toyota Corolla, believed to have been intended to transport members of the assault team after the explosion. Two of the militants were reportedly wearing uniforms resembling those of the Pakistan Army, the sources added.

The military said a sanitization operation was continuing to clear the area of any remaining militants involved in the attack. Security forces and law enforcement agencies would continue counterterrorism operations under the Azm-e-Istehkam campaign, the military said, adding that the deaths of the security personnel had strengthened the country's resolve to eliminate militant groups.

What restrictions were imposed after the attack?

Authorities imposed a curfew under Section 144 on key roads in Tank district following the assault. Deputy Commissioner Jamshed Khan said the restrictions were introduced to maintain public safety and law and order.

Under the order, the movement of pedestrians, motorcycles, passenger vehicles and cargo traffic has been banned daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until further notice. Ranwal Bazaar has also been ordered to remain closed during the same hours.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. The group also claimed a roadside bomb attack in Tank district on July 13 that killed two police officers. Tank district, near the former tribal districts bordering South Waziristan, has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent years, with armed groups repeatedly targeting security forces despite sustained counterterrorism operations.
