At least 14 people, including police officers, were killed and more than 18 others were injured in a suicide bombing outside a police station in Pakistan's northwestern Swat Valley on Sunday. Rescue 1122 KP spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi confirmed the updated toll to Nukta, after earlier figures put the number at nine.
What happened at the Swat police station?
A suspected suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the main gate of Kabal police station in Swat district while a peace protest was taking place nearby. The nearby crowd contributed to the high casualty count. District Police Officer (DPO) Umer Khan confirmed the attack was a suicide bombing and said investigators recovered the severed head of the suspected bomber from the blast site.
DPO Khan said a peace rally was underway when the attack occurred, but the apparent target was the police. He said the suspected suicide bomber attempted to enter the police premises but was stopped by officers who had been placed on high alert following a general security threat, triggering the explosion before he could gain entry.
How many people were killed or injured in the Swat blast?
Faizi told Nukta that nine bodies were shifted to Saidu Teaching Hospital, while doctors at Kabal Hospital confirmed five more victims, bringing the total fatalities to 14. More than 18 injured people have received emergency medical treatment and been transported to various hospitals for further care.
DPO Khan had earlier confirmed at least seven people killed, while Rescue 1122 Swat spokesperson Niaz Khan had initially put the toll at four.
Has anyone accepted responsibility for the attack?
No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has maintained a strong presence in the region for years and has frequently targeted security forces. Security analysts say the bombing could have been carried out in retaliation for recent intelligence-based operations by forces in the area, in which several suspected militants, including local commanders, were killed.
How did police and rescue teams respond?
Rescue 1122 deployed 13 ambulances and more than 45 emergency personnel to the operation. Police, Rescue 1122 personnel and other law enforcement officials rushed to the scene, evacuated the injured and launched a rescue operation. Rescue 1122 and hospital authorities appealed for blood donations as facilities struggled to cope with the influx of casualties.
Security forces cordoned off the area and collected evidence as part of an investigation that DPO Khan said was ongoing. Local residents had earlier transported many of the wounded and dead to Kabal and Saidu Sharif hospitals before rescue teams arrived.
What has the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government said?
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the suspected suicide bombing and expressed sorrow over the deaths of police personnel. He said those responsible for targeting police officers "deserve no leniency," adding that the nation was proud of the sacrifices made by police and security forces against militancy. Kundi also directed authorities to ensure the injured receive immediate and the best possible medical treatment.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi condemned the deadly explosion and sought a detailed report on the incident from the province's inspector general of police.
The chief minister expressed his condolences to the families of the police personnel and civilians killed in the blast. Afridi also wished a speedy recovery for the police officers and civilians injured in the attack and directed health authorities to ensure they receive the best possible medical treatment.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department declared an emergency at hospitals across Swat, placing facilities in Kabal and surrounding areas on high alert. All medical staff were directed to report for duty without delay. Officials said further details would be released as the investigation progressed and the toll was confirmed.
