Swat suicide bombing death toll rises to 17 after police station attack

The death toll from a suicide bombing at a police station in Pakistan's Swat Valley has risen to 17, police said Monday, after three more people, including two officers, died from their injuries.

The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack outside Kabal Police Station, which authorities said was the bomber's intended target.

How many people died in the Swat police station bombing?

The Swat suicide bombing death toll stands at 17, including seven police officers and 10 civilians, according to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Niaz Khan.

Two officers, Constable Mukarram Khan and Constable Hussain Khan, died later while being treated at Saidu Teaching Hospital. Another 19 people, including 13 police officers, remain hospitalized across the district.

Swat police spokesperson Iqbal Karimi confirmed the officers' deaths brought the number of police personnel killed to seven. Khan told Nukta the civilian death toll also rose after another patient died during treatment. Officials said the full list of injuries and fatalities is still being confirmed.

What happened during the attack?

The bombing took place Sunday outside Kabal Police Station, District Police Officer Muhammad Omar Khan said. He said officers had blocked a suspected suicide bomber from entering the premises, forcing him to detonate his explosives outside instead.

A peace rally was underway nearby at the time, but police said the station itself was the bomber's intended target. Officers had already been placed on heightened alert following a general security threat before the attack occurred.

Investigators later recovered the severed head of the suspected attacker from the blast site, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Who claimed responsibility for the bombing?

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, claimed responsibility for the bombing and named the suspected suicide bomber as Ilyas, also known as Hamza. The group is banned in Pakistan and has claimed several attacks on security forces in recent years.

Funeral prayers for the seven police officers killed were held with full state honors at Javed Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines in Kabal.

Regional Police Officer Malakand Syed Fida Hassan Shah and DPO Muhammad Omar Khan attended the ceremony before the bodies were handed over to their families for burial.

How is Pakistan responding to the attack?

Authorities declared an emergency across Swat district to coordinate the response to the bombing. The Deputy Commissioner's Office ordered all public and private hospitals onto high alert and instructed medical staff to remain on duty. Previously approved leave for health department personnel and emergency responders was also canceled.

Police, Rescue 1122, Civil Defense and other law enforcement agencies were directed to increase patrols and strengthen security at sensitive locations until further notice. Officials said the heightened alert will remain in place while the investigation continues.
