Teams take shape: Highlights and shocks from IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah

The two-day IPL auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Indian Premier League

The IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah concluded with drama, surprises, and record-breaking signings, setting the stage for the 18th edition of cricket's most prestigious league.

Across two action-packed days, ten franchises spent a whopping $75.72 million to assemble formidable squads.

Pant smashes auction records

Day one saw Lucknow Super Giants shell out a staggering $3.2 million for Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, making him the most expensive IPL signing ever.

Shreyas Iyer followed closely, joining Punjab Kings for $3.17 million, while Venkatesh Iyer fetched $2.81 million after a fierce bidding war, landing with Kolkata Knight Riders.

The rise of Suryavanshi

Day two’s headline was 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made history as the youngest-ever player sold in an IPL auction.

The left-handed all-rounder from Bihar was picked by Rajasthan Royals for $130,500. Suryavanshi, who debuted in the Ranji Trophy at just 12 and scored a triple century in an under-19 ODI, is poised for a meteoric rise.

Indian pacers in demand

Indian fast bowlers were in high demand, with Arshdeep Singh retained by Punjab Kings for $2.13 million using a right-to-match card.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru for $1.27 million, while Deepak Chahar moved to Mumbai Indians for $1.09 million.

Delhi Capitals acquired Mukesh Kumar for $942,000, and Akash Deep was picked by Lucknow Super Giants for the same amount.

Among overseas pacers, South African left-arm seamer Marco Jansen was snapped up by Punjab Kings for $830,000, while Mumbai Indians brought back New Zealand's Trent Boult for $1.48 million.

Top overseas buys

England’s Jos Buttler ($1.87 million, Gujarat Titans) and Jofra Archer ($1.48 million, Rajasthan Royals) were among the highest overseas earners, with franchises eager to secure match-winning international stars.

Mumbai Indians added versatility by picking England’s all-rounder Will Jacks for $622,849 and 18-year-old Afghan spinner Allah Ghazanfar for $569,000.

Unsold stars

Australia's David Warner went unsold in the auction after he had no takers in the accelerated round as well.

England's Jonny Bairstow also missed out on finding an IPL team while 42-year-old quick bowler James Anderson, who retired from England duty in the summer, did not attract any teams after registering at a base price of $148,115.

New Zealand stars like Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tim Southee, Mark Chapman, and Finn Allen were similarly overlooked.
