At least four policemen were killed in northwest Pakistan when militants stormed a district police headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday.

The attack on the complex, which houses both the district police headquarters and a residential complex, was concluded and all five assailants were killed by police.

“The operation was led by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) and District Police Officer (DPO) themselves,” a senior provincial government official told The Khorasan Diary.

Militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, a spokesperson for the group told Reuters.

Bannu is about 350 kilometers from Pakistan's capital Islamabad, which is under strict security lockdown due to the arrival of Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday ahead of a regional leaders' meeting this week.

'Heavy firing from both sides'

The Khorasan Diary earlier reported that there was heaving firing from both sides during the attack and the militants tried to enter the premises of the police headquarters.

Eyewitnesses reported heavy gunfire and chaos as police forces engaged the attackers. The attackers, who entered the premises camouflaged, successfully breached the police headquarters, raising serious concerns about security measures.
